Week 7 Post 1

For this exercise, I chose to follow businesses that were either in the same vein as my hypothetical businessor organizations that support the cause that this hypothetical business would support. I was thinking of being able to learn from their strategies and also from their followers, and to network and build relationships with those who are steps ahead on a similar path.

The premise of this hypothetical business (which is actually a future dream of mine) is that it is a retreat center/resort that caters to weddings, conferences, corporate retreats and family retreats. It would be a self-sustainable, eco-friendly, upscale place and it would have a symbiotic relationship to a program for refugee families transitioning to life in America. These families would live and work on the property, and while in the program they would not only gain work experience for their new American resumé, but they would also have a safe place in which to learn English, American culture, financial management, obtain driver's licenses, and so much more. So the business I chose to follow were either other nonprofits, retreat centers, or organizations supporting refugees. Listed below are the organizations I chose.

  1) Chai Lai Orchid
This is a resort in Thailand that doubles as an elephant refuge and employs women who are at risk for being trafficked for sex.

  2) Bishop Farm
This is a wedding venue in New Hampshire, the owner of which I am already acquainted with.

  3) World Relief
      An organization that supports refugees.

  4) International Rescue Committee in San Diego
      Another organization that supports refugees.

   5) The Purpose Hotel
Not quite in existence yet, this hotel, (when it opens), will be changing the world from the key that unlocks to the door to the blanket on the bed to the soap in the bathroom and the art on the wall, fighting poverty, homelessness, human trafficking, and the list goes on.

   6) The YMCA of the Rockies
This is where my dream was born. The YMCA of the Rockies is an 800 acre conference center and family camp that sits on the border of the Rocky Mountain National Park. Every summer it employs 500 people, many retirees, many college kids, and many young adults from YMCAs around the world who come to be part of a business internship. I worked there one summer in college and it was one of the best summers I ever had.

   7) Hume Christian Camp
My family and I stumbled upon this camp this past summer when we visited Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks. It is a place that is somewhat along the lines of the main concept I have presented here.

   8) Alpine Meadows Retreat
I don't know much about this place but it seems to be nearby. I thought following somewhat of a local business might be a good idea.
